22nd annual Ducky Derby season begins

Ducks race to support local youth and prevent child abuse

Walla Walla, Wash. – The 22nd annual Community Bank Ducky Derby will be held on Saturday, May 18, at Mill Creek in Walla Walla. The duck race will begin at 2 p.m. during the Family Fun Festival that will run from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This annual community event is sponsored by Community Bank and the Walla Walla Exchange Club Foundation. Proceeds from this event go toward child abuse prevention and support programs that benefit youth in the Walla Walla Valley.

The highlight of the event is the race of 19,000 little yellow plastic ducks down a stretch of Mill Creek. Community members are encouraged to purchase Ducky Derby tickets (one duck for $5 or five ducks for $20) for a chance to win one of 19 prizes donated by local businesses. Prizes will be awarded to the individuals who hold tickets with numbers matching those of the first ducks to cross the finish line.

“More than $25,000 in guaranteed prizes will be awarded this year, with the featured prize being a 2019 Toyota Corolla from McCurley Integrity Toyota of Walla Walla or $12,500 in cash,” said Sandi Rowe, Exchange Club president. “Ducky Derby tickets are available through contacting an Exchange Club member, at community events, and at designated ticket outlets.” Ticket outlets are: Community Bank branches, McCurley Integrity Toyota of Walla Walla, Albertsons, Falkenbergs Jewelers, L&G Ranch Supply, Super 1 Foods, Zip Zone, and Andy’s Market.

Last-minute tickets may be purchased before the race at the Family Fun Festival on May 18. If you’re an extra lucky-duck, you could win the mega prize of $1,000,000. For every 3,000 Ducky Derby tickets purchased, one duck’s number will be selected to be part of the mega prize pool. If the first duck across the finish line matches the duck number drawn from the mega pool the person holding that ticket will win both the new car and the $1,000,000.

The Family Fun Festival will provide a fun day for the whole family with free admission, activities for kids, free Pepsi, free popcorn, and 25-cent hot dogs. Parking for the event is available at the Dietrich Activity Center on the Walla Walla Community College campus.

Over the last two years, the Walla Walla Exchange Club has raised $100,856 and granted funds to 59 organizations in the Walla Walla Valley that support local youth and prevent child abuse. Scholarships totaling $5,000 were awarded through the Youth of the Month and the Accepting the Challenge of Excellence programs.
